SETTING The setting in Dreams of Terror and Death takes place in many different places. The book is full of short stories but the plot differs in them all. This is the entire dream cycle of H.P. Lovecraft and this book is full of horror tales. Some of the interesting stories in this book are: Azathoth: This takes place in,what seems like, a bigger town that is not very appealing to many people. The author describes it as follows,"When age fell upon the world, and wonder went out of the minds of men; when grey ctiies reared to smoky skies tall towers grim and ugly, in whose shadow noen might dream of the sun or of Spring's flowering meads; when learing stripped Earth of her mantle of beauty, and poets sang, no more save of twisted phantoms seen with bleared and inward-looking eyes; when theset hings had to pass, and childish hopes had gone away for ever, there was a man who traveled out of life on a quest into the spaces whither the world's dream had fled. The Descendant: The beginning of this story starts out as a man writing in his deathbed. From them it moves on to the speaker talking about a man who lives at the Gray's Inn, located in London. This man is described as "harmlessly mad", and all he seeks from life is not to think. The man who was writing, named Williams, brings a book callled Necronomicon to the mad man; and this is the story of what happens. The Thing in the Moonlight:This story is based on a letter that Lovecraft had written to a friend. Beyond the Wall of Sleep:This story is about a crazy murderer that blames what he does on another dimension.
The Doom That Came to Sarnath:This is about a war among mortal men that turns out very bad when they win. The Cats of Ulthar: This is a story about a town in which all the citizens believe that it is illegal to kill a cat; anyone who does suffers extremely. Celephais: This setting takes place beside the Cerenerian Sea right next to a city named Ooth-Nargal. One of the interesting things about this story is that somebody can leave it and come back many years later, just to see that nothing has changed. The Nameless City: This takes place in a sandy region of the world with shifting sands. The Other Gods:This is the story about a very wise prophet who soon finds out that being the smartest is not always the best.
